SA Farmers Embracing Business and Practical Skills Training Jan 2010
Farmers from all over South Australia packed the ballroom of the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Adelaide earlier this month to signal the completion of two years of study and work aimed at improving their business and practical skills.
Two hundred and sixty farmers from all regions of SA were present as either graduates, spouses or families at a dinner function at the hotel to collect graduating awards ranging from Certificate III in Agriculture right through to the Graduate Diploma in Rural Business Management. Training for these awards is delivered by Regional Skills Training.
Graduate Andrea Hannemann, from Mangalo on Eyre Peninsula spoke about her progression through the Graduate Diploma in Rural Business Management as “a life changing, fulfilling experience which has equipped our family business to tackle the future”. In April 2009 the first 6 graduates from the Graduate Diploma will be conferred with their Masters in Business Administration, following the establishment of a partnership between RST and The Australian Institute of Management. This final step provides for residents in rural and regional sectors to start studying in their vocation whilst still at school and graduate with a MBA all in their local region.
Groups of graduating trainees from Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Mid north, Riverland, Mallee and South East regions have benefitted from skills training such as chemical safety, shearing, first aid and farm safety, fire control, welding, machinery maintenance, safe chainsaw operation.
Graduates in Rural Business Management and Agriculture have benefitted from skills training such as leadership, succession & estate planning, capital budgeting,machinery management, communications and HR management, sustainable production systems, livestock and crop production, business planning, climate risk,OHS,marketing and risk management, financial management, legal and insurance.
All training is delivered in participants local regions. RST also seek subsidy funding to support course costs RST Managing Director, Caroline Graham, said that already RST had nearly 100 farmers beginning farm business management and agronomy training in 2010 with another 80 still continuing training from last year. Additionally 140 new agriculture trainees will have commenced training within the next few weeks.
